The 10th Anniversary of the Mike Procter Golf day in aid of the Widows and Orphans Fund was held on the 27th May 2014 . The initiative started 10years ago with two friends , Mike Procter and retired Brig Scales with Mike suggesting he would like to do something for the SAPS . After discussion with ourselves we decided on a golf day which saw the first one being played at Royal Durban Golf Club in 2005 . The golf day has developed in one of the biggest charity golf days in the province in support of the widows of police officers and the education of children of those less fortunate . The golf day is encouraged by the SAPS Management in KZN and the overwhelming support of many Corporate businesses in South Africa . The event has attracted some of South Africa’s greatest sporting celebrities over the years ; Simon Hobday , Gary Theichman , Wayne Fyvie , Andre Joubert , John Smit , Shaun Pollock , Neil Tovey , Mark Williams , Jonty Rhodes , Craig Joubert , Butch James , Henry Honniball , Stephan Terblanche , Oscar and Herman Chulupsky , Ian MacIntosh , Greame Pollock , Lee Irvine , Barry Richards , Kevin Shea and many others . The overall support has caused the Organinsing Committee to expand both golf courses at Mt Edgecombe CC with this year attracting not less than 232 players . Although the event does not have a single sponsor that covers all the costs , there have been great support from companies that we regard as gold medal sponsors with many other supporting sponsors that has caused this event to develop to the status it has reached thus far . Over the ten years the KZN Province has made a significant contribution of more than R2m to the Widows and Orphans Fund . The Organising team under the leadership of Brig Marius Janse van Rensburg every year , pulls out all the stops to improve and host a quality event which receives accolades across the landscape of South Africa
